How to calculate weight & size

A quotation requires the actual weight and all three dimensions of the fully packed parcel.

Advice for your shipmentCoordinate delivery

Test calculation for one package

Enter the outermost dimensions after packaging. The tool illustrates calculations, does not confirm rates or reception conditions.

Initial example: 0,15 CBM · 30 kg converted · 30 kg compared to calculate the charge with a coefficient of 5.000, not rounded.

WEIGHT CALCULATION

Weight and volume: understand correctly before sending

A lightweight yet bulky package that still takes up a lot of space. Therefore, the service can compare the actual weight with the converted weight to determine the basis for charging.

1. Actual weight

Is the number of kilograms weighed of the complete package, including goods, boxes, dunnage materials and reinforcement or pallets when available. Please weigh after packaging.

2. Volume weight

Is the number of kilograms converted from the three outermost dimensions of the package. With dimensions in cm: Length × Width × Height ÷ division factor. The coefficient must be according to the confirmed service.

Coefficients and units need to be distinguished

Plan Reference calculation Note
International express delivery Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 5.000 = kg converted For example, DHL Express uses a coefficient of 5.000. Does not apply automatically to all services.
Air Cargo Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 6.000 = kg converted Factor 6.000 appears in DHL Global Forwarding Air Freight terms; Check the coefficient on the specific quote.
Seaway LCL CBM = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 1.000.000 If the quote applies the W/M ratio of 1 CBM: 1 ton, compare the CBM with the actual weight ÷ 1.000. Minimum rates and other fees according to quote.
Road/other services According to the shipping unit's regulations There is no default coefficient for all routes and carriers.

Don't be mistaken: CBM is m³, not kg. Dividing the volume in cm³ by 1.000 gives the equivalent number of kg in the ratio 1 CBM : 1.000 kg; That is not the formula for calculating CBM and is not automatically the way to calculate charges for all Sea routes.

Example: package 60 × 50 × 50 cm, weight 10 kg

Volume: 150.000 cm³ = 0,15 CBM.

If coefficient is 5.000: 150.000 ÷ 5.000 = 30 kg. Compared to the actual 10 kg, the charging basis is 30 kg before the separate rule.

If coefficient is 6.000: result is 25 kg. This is the reason why it is necessary to confirm the correct coefficient before calculating.

Sea shipping example by W/M

Same package as above: 0,15 CBM and 10 ÷ 1.000 = 0,01 tons. If a 1:1 W/M ratio is applied, the larger value is 0,15 units W/M.

Results do not apply lot minimums and fees. Do not infer price from CBM or kg only.
